WHAT’S NEW

April 22, 2011EARTH WEEK – EARTH DAY.   The original “EARTH DAY” was started by Arthur Godfrey on March 12, 1970 with his trip from Detroit to Ann Arbor, Michigan in a MARS II Electric Car built by Apollo’s predecessor, EFP (Electric Fuel Propulsion), and his EARTH DAY Speech at the University of Michigan on that day.

To hear him talk about this on his daily radio program, click on the link below to view and listen:  Arthur Godfrey - 1st Earth Day Broadcast

That is a bit of history.  Arthur started it all.  Later “EARTH DAY” became “EARTH WEEK”.   Here is how it happened.  A week before March 12, 1970, Arthur Godfrey phoned EFP in Detroit from New York and asked if he could borrow an electric car to drive from Detroit to Ann Arbor (around 60-miles) where he would make a speech at the University of Michigan, the first EARTH DAY speech ever made.  EFP’s CEO, Robert Aronsson, met him with the MARS II Electric Car at the Pontchartrain Hotel in downtown Detroit where there was a Press Conference on EARTH DAY and Electric Cars. Then Godfrey took the wheel of the MARS II, with Aronsson at his side, and they drove off together to the Holiday Inn in Ann Arbor where there was another Press Conference.  From there Godfrey went to the University of Michigan for his EARTH DAY Speech.  On March 23, 1970, he told all about it on his radio program which you can hear on this Website.

Godfrey and Aronsson learned later that Ed Cole, President of General Motors, tailed the MARS II in a Buick.   Godfrey was staying at his home.   He told Godfrey that the MARS II would never make it to Ann Arbor (which was slightly uphill all the way).  He tells the story on his radio program.   After arriving at the Holiday Inn, Godfrey learned that the MARS II had only used 50% of its charge on the trip.  click photographs below to enlarge

WHAT'S NEW

April 21, 2011, Pompano Beach, Florida.   The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has asked Apollo to submit a Proposal on a grant which would finance the development of an Advanced Lead Acid Battery.   We have submitted the Proposal and DOE has accepted it for evaluation.    We should know if we will be one of the winners by the end of June, 2011. Apollo has under development a Second Generation Tri-Polar Lead Cobalt Battery made with light-weight  Lead Foam substrate material which is designed to replace Lithium-Ion Batteries in electric cars, with better performance, longer life, fast rechargeability,  at 20% of the cost, and without the danger of overheating, fire and explosion experienced in Lithium batteries.

WHAT'S NEW

Professor Dr. Karl Kordesch, one of the top scientist in the world on Fuel Cell and Battery technology, passed away on January 12, 2011 at his home in Eugene, Oregon. Dr Kordesch was a Director and Vice President of Apollo Energy Systems, Inc. and head of Apollo's fuel cell program, having joined the Company in 1997. He made a tremendous contribution to Apollo on Alkaline Fuel Cell technology and brought to Apollo 150 patent in Fuel Cells, Batteries and related products. He was in charge of Apollo's Fuel Cell Development Program at the Technical University of Graz, Austria from 1997 to 2007 heading a team of scientist and engineers, three of whom received their PhDs on Alkaline Fuel Cells under this program.

Dr. Kordesch will be replaced by Dr. Peter Kalal, a protégé of Dr. Kordesch. Dr. Kalal worked as a research associate under Dr. Kordesch at the Technical University of Graz for five years.

Click on Biographical Sketch of Dr. Kordesch for details of his rich background.

What's New

Two Energy Pioneers, Dr. Karl Kordesch (one of the top Fuel Cell scientist in the world), and Robert R. Aronsson (a battery inventor and manufacturer) have developed three products that can help solve the world's problems of Growing Oil Shortage, Air Pollution, and Global Warming.  These are revolutionary new products covered by four new patents and will be sold at very low prices once Apollo is in mass production:

  • Tri-Polar Lead Cobalt Battery II which can power an electric vehicle over 200 miles on a
charge (battery only) and can be sold at $90 per kilowatt hour.

  • Apollo Alkaline Fuel Cell with a higher voltage and efficiency than any other fuel cell and
which can be sold for $188 per kilowatt.

  • Apollo Ammonia Cracker which can produce Hydrogen from liquid ammonia
(75% of ammonia, NH3, is hydrogen) and can be sold for $470 per kilowatt.

These products can be combined into Apollo Power Plants for homes and Electric Propulsion Systems for vehicles of all kinds.

Two White Papers describe these products and can be seen below:

  1. New Battery for Electric Car (Robert R. Aronsson)

  2. Alkaline Fuel Cell Manuscript (Dr. Karl Kordesch)
